How to Use Cannabis Safely: Start Low, Go Slow

The most common mistake new cannabis users make is taking too much, too fast. Unlike alcohol, cannabis effects — especially from edibles — can take 30 to 90 minutes to fully kick in. Many first-timers take a second dose thinking the first didn't work, then experience an overwhelming high 2 hours later.

The golden rule is simple: start low and go slow. For edibles, 2.5–5 mg of THC is an appropriate starting point for most first-timers. For flower, one or two small puffs is enough to begin. Wait for the full onset before deciding whether to consume more.

Product potency has increased dramatically over the past decade. Modern cannabis flower averages 20–25% THC, compared to roughly 4% in the 1990s. This means traditional "one hit" assumptions no longer apply. Use this calculator as a starting point, and always purchase from a verified licensed dispensary where products are accurately labeled and tested.
